In accordance with local district policy and Texas Education Code, §33.023 and §33.024, school libraries are viewed as places for voluntary inquiry, and library materials must be treated differently from instructional materials used in classroom instruction. Local policy and Texas Education Code focuses on transparency with parents while meeting student needs to provide supplemental enrichment in their learning with appropriate materials. While teachers and librarians are trained in selecting materials in accordance with board policy and may provide guidance to students in selecting texts, the ultimate determination of appropriateness lies with the student and the parent. The district recognizes that parents are the primary decision-makers regarding their student's access to library materials, and the need to keep parents informed as to the materials that are available for their students.
