Rivas named TASRO Officer of the Year

We are excited to announce that Lorena ISD School Resource Officer Sergeant Peter Rivas has received the Texas Association of School Resource Officers Lynelle Sparks Officer of the Year award!  He became LISD’s first SRO in 2018, and is currently the supervisor of the LISD SRO program. “It’s a tremendous honor to have received the Lynelle Sparks, School Resource Officer of the Year award. The number of SROs in the State of Texas that are out there doing amazing things makes me proud to be a part of it,” Rivas said. “The namesake for the award is amazing, and to be the first Officer to have achieved this award is beyond words. Lynelle Sparks has done an outstanding job of setting the standard for School Resource Officers, and our roles within schools. Working with kids of all ages, and seeing the next generation of our community growing up and navigating to success in their chosen path is great.”

In a partnership with the City of Lorena and the Lorena Police Department, LISD now has a School Resource Officer on each campus. Sergeant Rivas is the lead SRO and is housed on the High School campus. Officer Christina Serrato is the SRO on the Middle School campus, Officer Mike Drummond is the SRO on the Elementary School campus, and Officer Sami Bull is the SRO on the Primary School campus. “I have the privilege of working alongside some of the best Police Officers and educators, who demonstrate the passion and care needed to educate our children. Our school district was among the first in our area to have a fully licensed police officer assigned to each of our school campuses,” said Rivas. “These officers show compassion, courage, and integrity every day, and are dedicated to making a positive impact on our children's lives. Our goal is to provide our kids with a safe and secure school environment, to be positive role models for them, and to be there for them when they need us. I have complete confidence in my team, our school district, our teachers, and our community.”

The five guiding principles of the LISD School Resource Officer Program are:  to help ensure a safe and secure educational environment; educate and mentor students; take a proactive approach to establish positive relationships; be present and accessible; and to lead by example.
