LISD Visual Arts

Students at multiple LISD schools received recognition for their artwork during the 2023-2024 school year. The visual arts program offers students a variety of opportunities to showcase their talents. Over 30 LISD students won awards during the school year.


Lorena Elementary School

Four students won awards at the Heart of Texas Fair and Rodeo Art Contest.

12 students entered the Art on Elm local art contest and won multiple awards.


Lorena Middle School

LMS students submitted designs and seven won, and were awarded with a certificate, and the honor of having their sidewalk chalk mural painted in a local park.

Jr. Vase contest: 14 students entered, 12 artworks received a score of “4” which is gold medal and the highest you can achieve at this contest.


Lorena High School

Scholastic Art and Writing awards 

  • The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards is the oldest and most influential youth art, and cultural competition in the United States. Each year, over 330,000 entries from students in grades 7 to 12 compete in approximately 29 categories of art and writing.

Since its establishment in 1923, many recipients of the Gold Key in this competition have gone on to become world-renowned artists and writers, including renowned mystery novelist Stephen King and the influential contemporary artist Andy Warhol.

  • Region At Large Southwest- All of Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana.
  • Gold Key= Top 5% of art in that category in the artists region. Emma Erler’s art earned Gold Key and will be competing in the National competition in June in New York City.
  • Silver Key= Top 7% Tia Pettigrew, Jane Barry, and Emma Erler received this honor.

Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE)

  • The UIL equivalent contest for visual arts.
  • 33,000 Regional Entries across the state

Holly Layton- Regional Gold medal

  • State qualifiers are the top 10% of entries. This year only 2,300 artworks qualified for State. 
  • Natalie Erler, Emma Erler, and Anne Barry received gold medals at State with Natalie Erler earning Gold Seal for one of her works. Gold Seal is the top 7% of artwork in the state. 165 works of art were given Gold Seal status. This summer the Gold Seal Gallery will travel around Texas to Dallas, Houston, Austin, and then will be on display at the TAEA Art Conference in Galveston in November.
 

Art students had the opportunity to showcase their work to the community during the LISD Fine Arts Festival. The event featured 12 pieces from Lorena Primary School, over 450 pieces from Lorena Elementary School, and a combined total of nearly 150 pieces from the Middle School and High School.
