LES student takes top prize

Lorena Elementary fifth grader Walter Holle went to the McLennan County Jr. Livestock show to take part in the Ag Mechanics competition. Holle’s competitors were kids of all ages including high school students, but he did not back down. Holle was named the Grand Champion in Ag Mechanics. “At first I was like okay I won an award but what did I win,” Holle said. “And then I realized, oh my gosh I just won the whole show.”

In Ag mechanics competitors build a project and then present it to judges. Holle chose to build a desk for his project. “I didn’t just want a plain old desk in my room, and I know I couldn’t find a cool desk anywhere so I decided I wanted to build one on my own.”

On competition day Holle said he was nervous at first, but the judges were impressed. On Holle’s critique sheet he scored 92 out of 100.

Holle also received a $1,000 scholarship to Texas State Technical College.
