Library Curriculum
KINDERGARTEN - Our students will: |
- Participate in library orientation; learn proper book care and check-out procedures (TEKS 110.2.12 D)
- Learn library rules and expected behavior (TEKS 110.2.1 B; 113.2.8 A & B)
- Acquire working knowledge of library terminology, such as check-out/check-in, due date, shelf marker, etc. (TEKS 110.2.8 A)
- Develop listening skills through hearing stories read aloud (TEKS 110.2.1 A, D & E; 110.2.8 B)
- Participate in creative activities designed to provide understanding and interpretation of stories read aloud (TEKS 110.2.3 D; 110.2.10 C)
- Experience culturally diverse books from various authors and illustrators (TEKS 110.2.2 A & B; 110.2.13 A & B)
- Recognize the functions of an author and of an illustrator (TEKS 110.2.10 D; 110.2.11 E)
- Identify parts of a book, such as cover, spine, title page, etc. (TEKS 110.2.5 H)
- Understand the difference between a "made up" story and "real information" (TEKS 110.2.11 C & D)
- Understand basic story structure, such as character, plot, setting (TEKS 110.2.11 B)
- Experience a variety of literarture on customs, holidays and celebrations (TEKS 113.2.1 A & B; 113.2.12 A & C)
- Select books based on personal interest (TEKS 110.2.9 B)

| FIRST GRADE - Our students will: |
- Participate in library orientation; learn proper book care; location and use of important areas of the library (TEKS 110.3.15 F; 110.3.5 A)
- Learn library rules, expected behavior and circulation policies (TEKS 110.3.1 B)
- Listen attentively and critically to stories read aloud (TEKS 110.3.1 A, D & E; 110.3.13 A)
- Participate in creative activities designed to provide understanding and interpretation of stories; practice predicting outcomes and drawing conclusions (TEKS 110.3.3 D; 110.3.4 D; 110.3.13 C; 110.3.15 C)
- Experience cultural diversity in literature (TEKS 110.3.2 A & B; 110.3.16 A & B)
- Recognize Caldecott Award winning books (TEKS 110.3.13 E)
- Distinguish the role of the author from the illustrator; recognize a variety of famous authors and illustrators (TEKS 110.3.13 E; 110.3.14 F)
- Understand basic story structure and recognize a variety of simple literary terms (TEKS 110.3.12 C; 110.3.14 B, G, H & I; 113.3.17 C)
- Identify and use parts of a book, such as cover, spine, title page, table of contents, index, etc. (TEKS 110.3.5 I; 110.3.15 E)
- Distinguish between fiction and non-fiction books (TEKS 110.3.14 C)
- Understand the alphabetical arrangement of the easy fiction section and the numerical order of the non-fiction books (TEKS 110.3.5 E; 110.3.15 D; 111.13.1.1 A)
- Independently locate and choose books based on personal interest and appropriate reading level (TEKS 110.3.9 A, B & D)
- Acquire information through reading (TEKS 110.3.15 B)
- Read a variety of books for information and for pleasure (TEKS 110.3.10 A)
