Lorena High School Book Club
Est. April 2005
What is a Book Club? Very simple. A book club is a club for people who love books and love to read. It has been called “Today’s Town Square” meaning the place where people get together to discuss ideas and life. Reading a book is half the pleasure—the other half is sharing it with others. So, if you love to read, but don’t want to talk about what you read, then this might not be the place for you. On the other hand, if you love to read, and just want to listen to what other people have to say about different books, you would certainly be welcome to be a part.
Why have a Book Club?
- To promote great books
- To reward reading with refreshments, entertainment, trips,
- To broaden horizons
- To create a non-threatening place for book lovers to get together and share good books
- To encourage reading among friends, or to make new friends among people who have similar interests
- To learn to think critically about books
What happens in a Book Club Meeting? Obviously, the main idea is that everyone is reading something. Most books clubs have everyone in the club reading the same book at the same time, then coming together to discuss it. We could do that, or we could have everyone reading something different and coming to the meeting to report about it to the other members. Or we could do a combination of the two. Whichever we do, we would be wanting a little information about the author; we might want to hear what some critics have written about the book; we would want to think about some of the main themes of the book; we would want to talk about the main characters; and we would want to have opportunity to tell personal opinions of the book, and how it affected us.
The Lorena Book Club first met on April 18, 2005. Since the first meeting, students have been meeting with Mrs. Sams approximately every 2-3 weeks to discuss a different book.
The Lorena Book Club has discussed the following books:
Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom
Montmorency: Thief, Liar, Gentleman? By Eleanor Updale
The Thief Lord by Cornelia Funke
Out of the Silent Planet by C.S. Lewis
Eragon by Christopher Paolini
