Students visiting the nurse’s office will be evaluated and treated within the
allowable limits of the law. Lorena ISD uses several over the counter topical
products for first aid and itching, etc. (Bactine, Caladryl) Students will be sent
home if they have a temperature of 100.0 degrees or greater, vomiting, diarrhea,
conjunctivitis (pink eye) without treatment, or any other contagious condition. If
your students has any of these conditions at home before school or the night
before, please do not send them to school. Students must be free from the
above symptoms for 24 hours before they may return to school or be treated with
prescribed medication for 24 hours for bacterial infections. Please adhere to this
policy to prevent the unnecessary spread of illness to other students and faculty.
If other illness complaints or injuries warrant, a call will be made to the
parent/guardian at the nurses’ discretion. Vomiting due to coughing, drainage,
seeing someone else vomit, over-activity during athletics/PE, reflux or motion
sickness will not be sent home.
Please make sure the school has current phone numbers for you at home, cell
and work and at least one emergency contact in case we need to reach you for
illnesses or injuries.
If a teacher feels that a student is too ill to stay in class (they are unable to do
their work, constant complaining, sleeping, etc) regardless of whether that
student is running fever or vomiting (after consultation with the nurse), the
teacher has the option of calling the parent themselves.
Students should not come to the nurse from band, music, special ed, P.E.,
athletics or lunch unless there is a sudden onset of illness or an injury that occurs during that class period. They are only in these classes for
a short time. Middle and High school athletics related injuries will be evaluated
by the trainer.
Reporting illness: If your child is diagnosed with a contagious illness such as
chicken pox, strep throat, scarlet fever, pink eye, flu, staph infection, mono,
shigellosis, giardiasis, hepatitis, meningitis, measles, mumps, salmonellosis,
tuberculosis. pertussis (whooping cough), etc., please let the nurse know.
Several contagious illnesses are classified reportable and must be submitted to
the Texas Department of Health. In case of an outbreak such as chicken pox,
meningitis, hepatitis, etc., letters will be sent notifying you of the condition and
any precautions you should take.
